Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has heaped praise on Arshdeep Singh, calling him India’s No. 1 bowler in white-ball cricket, while also backing Khaleel Ahmed as the closest alternative among left-arm pacers. Pathan, who has himself been part of India’s pace revolution, believes Khaleel has all the tools to step up whenever required.

Arshdeep has grown into a central figure in India’s T20I setup over the past couple of years. His standout contribution came during the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he played a pivotal role in India’s title triumph. Finishing as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 17 scalps, Arshdeep once again highlighted his big-match temperament.
With 99 wickets in just 63 T20Is, he is on the verge of becoming the first Indian bowler to cross the 100-wicket milestone in the format—a remarkable feat at just 25 years of age. Irfan Pathan stressed that while Arshdeep remains India’s go-to option, Khaleel Ahmed is shaping up as the next best left-arm fast bowler.

Highlighting Khaleel’s improved pace, swing, and variations, Irfan Pathan said: “Arshdeep is our No. 1 bowler in white-ball cricket, and there’s no doubt about it. But after him, Khaleel ticks all the boxes—he consistently bowls at 135-140 kph, swings the ball both ways, and has developed an effective bouncer. Importantly, he is improving with every season.”
Khaleel last donned the India jersey in a T20I against Sri Lanka in 2024, where he went wicketless on a turning track in Pallekelle. However, his performances in the IPL turned heads, as he became a reliable wicket-taker for Chennai Super Kings in the powerplay. He bagged 15 wickets in 14 games, often striking early for his side.

According to Pathan, the biggest positive in Khaleel’s development has been his adaptability. He pointed out Khaleel’s sharper seam position, a much-improved slow bouncer, and his enhanced fitness levels.
“He is at his peak now and can sustain it for the next 4-5 years. It’s about grabbing opportunities at the right time and performing in crucial situations. His stint with CSK has boosted his confidence, and I genuinely believe he can make it big over the next few years,” Irfan Pathan said.

For now, Khaleel finds himself outside India’s immediate T20I plans, having missed selection in the 15-member Asia Cup squad. However, with India set to begin their campaign against UAE on September 10, Pathan’s words serve as a reminder that Khaleel remains a strong contender waiting for his opportunity.
