Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes the team management is likely to continue its recent selection strategy for the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan, even if it means leaving Kuldeep Yadav out of the playing XI once again. India will take on Afghanistan in a four-day Test in Mullanpur beginning June 6, and the team combination is already a major talking point. While Kuldeep boasts an outstanding Test record with 76 wickets from just 17 matches at an average of 22.42, India’s preference for batting depth could work against the left-arm wrist-spinner.

Over the past few home assignments, the Indian team has consistently opted for spin-bowling all-rounders who can strengthen the lower order, rather than relying solely on specialist spinners. Pathan feels the same approach could be adopted against Afghanistan.
Speaking on the Follow the Blues show, Irfan Pathan predicted that India would prioritise a long batting lineup extending to No. 8. According to him, players like Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Harsh Dubey could offer the balance the team management is looking for.

“India likes to bat till No. 8, and that’s how they generally build their side. That could mean players such as Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar get the nod, with Harsh Dubey also providing depth lower down the order,” Irfan Pathan explained.

The former all-rounder also highlighted the importance of giving young players exposure in international cricket, especially ahead of tougher assignments in the future. He believes opportunities against Afghanistan could help emerging talents establish themselves within the setup.
Pathan reserved special praise for Nitish Kumar Reddy, whose century during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia significantly boosted his credentials. He also backed Dhruv Jurel to make a strong impression if given a chance in the Test.

“Nitish has already shown his quality by scoring a hundred in Australia, which is a remarkable achievement for a young player. Dhruv Jurel has similar potential. If he can score runs against Afghanistan, it will only strengthen the confidence the team management has in him,” Irfan Pathan said.
With India balancing immediate success and long-term planning, the final team selection will offer a clear indication of how the management views its next generation of Test cricketers.
