Jamie Overton’s raw pace made a big impression at Chepauk on Saturday, and Tilak Varma felt it first-hand during the Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 clash against the Chennai Super Kings. One sharp delivery from the England quick struck Tilak on the wrist so hard that it knocked his fitness band clean off, underlining just how hostile Overton can be when he is operating at full throttle.

The incident came in the 12th over, soon after Overton was introduced into the attack. He immediately tested Tilak with pace and bounce, and the MI batter tried to improvise with a shuffle across the crease and a scoop shot. But the timing was off, and the ball crashed into his wrist where the band was strapped. The force of the blow sent it flying, leaving the Chepauk crowd visibly stunned.

It was a moment that quickly went viral, and it also served as a reminder of Overton’s ability to intimidate batters with sheer speed. Tilak, though rattled, stayed on and tried to rebuild, but Mumbai’s innings never quite settled. He later perished while attempting a sweep against a turning ball, with Ruturaj Gaikwad taking a sharp catch.

That dismissal summed up MI’s night. They never quite found the tempo they needed, and the middle order failed to support Naman Dhir, who stood out with a fighting 57 off 37 balls. Hardik Pandya’s scratchy 18 off 23 deliveries only added to the pressure, and Mumbai closed at 159 for 7, a total that always felt below par on a Chepauk surface offering limited assistance.

Chennai Super Kings made the chase look comfortable. Ruturaj Gaikwad led from the front with an unbeaten 67 off 48 balls, while Kartik Sharma added a composed 54 not out off 40 deliveries to bring up his maiden IPL fifty. CSK got home with eight wickets in hand and 11 balls remaining, a result that highlighted the gulf in control between the two sides on the night.

For Tilak, it was just a broken fitness band. For Mumbai Indians, it was another damaging defeat.
