Australia are under significant pressure after suffering a nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in the opening Test of the series in Darwin. The result was a major setback for the No. 1-ranked Test side, with Bangladesh producing a disciplined performance to secure one of their most memorable victories away from home. With the second Test scheduled in Mackay, Australia will be desperate to respond and level the series. A defeat or draw that allows Bangladesh to secure a historic series victory would be a significant disappointment for the hosts.

The result has also intensified discussions around the age and form of several members of Australia’s Test squad. Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie has backed Pat Cummins and believes the captain should not be blamed for the defeat. Speaking to The Indian Express, Gillespie identified Australia’s batting failure as the biggest reason behind their loss, while acknowledging that Bangladesh thoroughly outplayed them. “Pat Cummins’ captaincy was fine, but Australia batted poorly in the first innings.”

Gillespie praised Bangladesh for adopting a patient approach and maintaining pressure throughout the contest. He expects Australia to respond strongly in Mackay, but also acknowledges that the current squad is entering a transitional phase.

According to Jason Gillespie, selectors are likely to introduce more young players over the next six to 12 months as Australia gradually refresh their Test team. Matthew Renshaw has already been recalled for the second Test, replacing Jake Weatherald, while Scott Boland is another player being considered for the final XI.  Gillespie believes the Mackay surface should provide Australia with better conditions to produce a strong performance.

The former pacer also backed Australia’s experienced fast-bowling trio of Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. Despite the defeat, Gillespie felt the three quicks bowled well in Darwin and were let down by Bangladesh’s impressive batting effort. “They’ve been great. I thought they bowled quite well in the first Test.”

He believes Australia’s pace attack can make a significant impact in Mackay if the bowlers maintain the same intensity and execution. Gillespie also credited Bangladesh’s bowling unit for playing a crucial role in the historic victory. The visitors’ seamers consistently challenged Australia’s batters and helped put them under pressure at important stages of the Test.

Tanzid Hasan was another standout performer. The Bangladesh opener scored his maiden Test century in Australia and played a key role in helping his team establish control during the match.

Gillespie believes Bangladesh now faces a different challenge: maintaining the same intensity after producing such a significant result. Australia are expected to come out aggressively in Mackay, making the second Test a crucial examination of Bangladesh’s ability to handle pressure. For Australia, the objective is simple — rediscover their batting consistency, support their world-class pace attack and prevent Bangladesh from completing a historic series victory.
