BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has opened the door for a potential review of the ‘Impact Player’ rule in IPL 2024, acknowledging its polarizing impact on the tournament. Introduced as a ‘test case’, this rule has spurred high-scoring encounters, with teams breaching the 250-run mark on eight occasions. However, it has also sparked criticism from players, coaches, and analysts, who argue that it tilts the balance heavily in favour of batting sides and limits opportunities for bowlers.

India captain Rohit Sharma weighed in on the debate, highlighting the challenge it poses for all-rounders. “The Impact Player rule was introduced as a test case. While it offers additional playing opportunities to two Indian players, it also affects all-rounders who don’t get enough chances to bowl,” Rohit Sharma remarked during a media interaction at the BCCI office.

Jay Shah emphasized that stakeholders would gather to evaluate the rule’s efficacy, likely after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup.

“If players express discontent, we will address it. However, no such grievances have been raised thus far. Following the IPL and the World Cup, we will convene discussions with players, franchises, and broadcasters to chart the way forward,” Jay Shah clarified.

Regarding player workload management, Jay Shah dismissed the notion of resting T20 World Cup-bound players currently participating in the IPL, asserting that the tournament serves as invaluable preparation.

“Why rest players when the IPL offers optimal practice? This diversity in competition, featuring players from various countries, provides an ideal platform for our cricketers to hone their skills,” Jay Shah explained.

He underscored the significance of Indian players facing international counterparts in the IPL, citing it as crucial preparation for upcoming challenges.

“Bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah benefit from bowling against formidable batters like Travis Head. This exposure helps them understand their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses, providing invaluable insights,” Jay Shah elaborated, highlighting the IPL’s role in refining players’ strategies ahead of major tournaments.
