Though recently WV Raman has been appointed as the head coach of Indian women’s cricket team, his position is in serious doubt due to the recent rift between the two members of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) – Diana Edulji and the chief Vinod Rai. The former World Cup-winning Indian captain Kapil Dev, who was a member to select the head coach, feels disturbed about what all is happening.

CoA chief Vinod Rai formed a new Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) to select the head coach of Indian women’s cricket team. Kapil Dev, Shanta Rangaswamy and Anshuman Gaekwad were those new CAC members who have chosen WV Raman as the head coach.

However, Diana Edulji wanted that the original CAC members, consisted by Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, should take that responsibility who were in that role till the 2018 ICC Women’s World T20. Further, she has raised other questions on the new coach appointment process and called the new coach appointment process is illegal as she hasn’t approved it.

Observing the entire situation, Kapil Dev told PTI, “I am very disturbed about what all is happening. I don’t want to take names but ego of one particular individual shouldn’t be an impediment towards developing the women’s game in the country. Someone might have his or her personal likes or dislikes but that is not above the interest of the national women’s team.”

After the interview of the shortlisted candidates, the CAC members decided three names for the head coach role in the order of preference – 1. Gary Kirsten, 2. WV Raman and 3. Venkatesh Prasad.

However, Kirsten became ineligible for that role due to the Conflict of Interest as per the BCCI constitution as he is already playing the role of head coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Hence, BCCI decided to appoint WV Raman as the new head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team.

Talking about their selection process of the head coach, Kapil added that if anyone has the problem with the selected coaching names, then he/she doesn’t have the best interest for the Indian cricket.

Kapil added, “Look at the names who applied. Gary Kirsten, who coached India to World Cup. Venkatesh Prasad, who was Indian men’s team bowling coach. Raman has earned respect from everyone with his technical knowledge. If anyone has problem with these names, then he/she doesn’t have best interest of Indian cricket in mind.”

Kapil also said that Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur have raised the women’s cricket level in the nation and that’s why they have come to contribute for the nation.

Kapil said, “Just tell me where was women’s cricket at least 10 years back. Who raised the profile? It’s the players like Mithali and Harman. They have raised it to such a level that even someone like me, who didn’t keep a track of what was happening a decade back, wanted to contribute.

“Tell me one thing. Myself, Anshu and Shantha, we all have other commitments also. When we were approached, we agreed because all of us thought that we would be able to make a difference. Is it a fair thing to rake up controversy and derail the development that has happened over the years?”
