Karun Nair is making headlines with his scintillating form, and he hopes the Indian selectors are taking notice. Nearly eight years have passed since the talented batter last represented India, but his performances in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 have reignited hopes of an international comeback. Leading Vidarbha, Nair has amassed an incredible 752 runs in just seven innings, earning endorsements from several former Indian cricketers who believe he deserves another shot at the national team.

Reports suggest that the selectors are closely monitoring Nair’s recent performances in both red-ball and white-ball formats. With the Indian men’s cricket team undergoing a transition phase, the 33-year-old’s remarkable form makes him a strong contender for a recall.

“The dream is always to play for the country,” Karun Nair told PTI. “That’s the reason we play this game. So yes, the dream is still alive, and the goal remains to play for India.”

Karun Nair made his Test debut during the 2016 home series against England, where he became only the second Indian batter to score a triple century in Tests. However, that innings was the lone highlight of a short international career spanning six Tests and 374 runs.

Now averaging a staggering 752 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Nair’s resurgence comes at the perfect time. With selectors set to announce squads for the England ODIs and Champions Trophy, his performances couldn’t be more timely.

“I think this is my third comeback,” Karun Nair said with a laugh. “I need to keep doing what I’m doing—score runs in every game I play. Everything else is out of my control. Until selection happens, it’s just a dream, and I’m taking it one innings at a time.”

Reflecting on his struggles in domestic cricket and the IPL, Nair admitted to doubts during tough phases but never gave up. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t afraid. I questioned where my career was heading, but I decided to start from zero and give myself a few years to see how things unfold.”

Those struggles, Nair believes, shaped him. “It was a tough emotional and mental phase, but it taught me so much about myself and my cricket. I’m grateful for those lessons because, without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
