Indian opener Shubman Gill had a promising start to his innings in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 game against South Africa, but his knock was cut short by a peach of a delivery from Keshav Maharaj. After India won the toss and elected to bat, Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma (40) put on a 62-run opening partnership to put the South African bowlers under pressure.

Shubman Gill looked in great touch, striking four boundaries and one six in his innings. However, in the 10th over, Keshav Maharaj deceived Shubman Gill with a tossed-up slower ball that drifted in from the outside leg. Gill was drawn forward and the ball ripped past the outside edge, beating him in the flight, dipping, turning, and then going on to hit the top of the off-stump.

Shubman Gill was dismissed for 23 runs off 24 balls, and his wicket was a major blow to India. However, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer are now batting well and will be hoping to carry on and lay a platform for the power hitters to end the innings on a high.

Gill’s dismissal was largely down to some excellent bowling from Keshav Maharaj. The South African spinner bowled a tossed-up slower ball that drifted in from the outside leg, which is a very difficult delivery to play. Gill was drawn forward by the flight of the ball and it ripped past the outside edge, beating him in the flight, dipping, turning, and then going on to hit the top of the off-stump.

Shubman Gill is a very talented batsman and he has a lot of potential. However, he needs to be more patient and disciplined at the crease. He has a tendency to play loose shots early in his innings, which can lead to his dismissal. Gill needs to work on his shot selection and play more cautiously in the early stages of his innings.
