The setback came in the form of a severe quadriceps injury during IPL 2023, forcing Rahul into surgery and a prolonged period of immobility. Recounting the difficult phase, Rahul disclosed, “I couldn’t walk for the first three or four weeks. I was on the walker and, then slowly started building myself up during all that time.”

The initial prognosis indicated a five-month recovery period, with the surgery occurring in May, right on the eve of the impending World Cup. Despite the grim prognosis and the surgeon’s caution about the tight timeline, Rahul kept a positive mindset.

“I don’t think it’s possible to make it in time for the World Cup. That’s what the surgeon told us as well. He said it will take five months from the time of surgery,” KL Rahul acknowledged. The challenging journey involved overcoming not just physical hurdles but also the mental stress of potential non-participation in the prestigious tournament.

Rahul’s comeback began to take shape during the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, where he showcased his mettle with a match-winning century against Pakistan. His pivotal role in the series against Australia, where he led the Indian team in two ODIs and contributed significantly with the bat, marked a crucial phase in his recovery.

The World Cup opener against Pakistan provided a stage for Rahul’s remarkable comeback. Amidst a precarious start for India at 2 for 3, Rahul displayed his resilience by crafting a crucial 97-run innings, forming a formidable partnership with Virat Kohli. His knock played a pivotal role in India’s resounding victory at the M Chidambaram stadium.

Notably, Rahul etched his name in the record books with the fastest century by an Indian in the World Cup, achieving the milestone in just 62 balls against the Netherlands. His adaptability and ability to accelerate the scoring rate when needed became defining features of his performances.
