Over the years, Virat Kohli has established himself as one of the best batsmen in international cricket. Such has been his exploits on the field that, by now, everyone knows you neither give Kohli a second chance nor should you ever attempt to sledge him. Those who don’t know why should go to YouTube and search for his batting videos.

Kohli was very vocal during South Africa’s batting

A gifted batsman like Kohli rarely gives the opposition a chance to get him out so a dropped catch or missing a run-out can be fatal. When it comes to sledging, the matches he has played in the past are proof enough that the verbal exchanges only end up fuelling his hunger to score more runs.

Unfortunately for Tabraiz Shamsi, the South African spinner eventually learned that lesson the hard way.

During India’s thrilling 73-run win over South Africa in the fifth ODI, Kohli, continuing his fine form in the series, was probably on his way to another big score when he was unfortunately run-out after a mix-up with Rohit Sharma in the middle. He was dismissed for 36 runs after a direct hit from JP Duminy found him short at the crease.

But, during his stay at the crease, Kohli and Shamsi were involved in a heated exchange where the South African was seen having a go at the Indian captain. The Delhi dasher didn’t really say much at that time and his dismissal further ended any chance of him getting even with the South African.

However, after the Proteas stuttered in their run-chase and Shamsi came out to bat, Kohli – who rarely forgets or forgives – struck back with a brutal jibe aimed at the tail-ender. Coming out to bat after the dismissal of H Klaasen, Shamsi was seen sporting a chest pad even as the bowler was Kuldeep Yadav – a spinner.

Sensing an opportunity to return the favour, Kohli poked fun at the South African and the stump mic did the rest. “Chest pad Shammo (Shamsi), you have a chest pad on,” Kohli asked Shamsi before bursting into laughter. Whether Kohli’s jibe rattled him or not, Shamsi’s innings didn’t last more than a ball as he got out while playing a big hoick at long-on.
