Kris Srikkanth Rates Rohit Sharma As One Of The Best One-day Openers

Former Indian opener, Krisshnamachari Srikkanth reckons that the Indian deputy skipper in limited-over cricket, Rohit Sharma has teh potential to become teh greatest opener in ODIs, considering his ability to score big centuries. Out of his 29 tons in ODIs, 11 times Sharma has managed to surpass eth tally of 140, including three double centuries.

Srikkanth, who was also known as an explosive opener during his playing days, said Rohit will be in the top-3 or top-5 in the list of all-time greatest openers.

During a chat on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’, Srikkanth said, “I would rate him as one of the greatest all-time one-day openers in world cricket. What’s the greatest quality in Rohit Sharma is that he goes for these big hundreds and double hundreds, that is something amazing. In a one-day match, you will go 150, 180, 200, just imagine where you are going to take the team to, that’s the greatness about Rohit.”

The 60-year-old Kris Srikkanth played 43 Tests and 146 ODIs between 1981 and 1992. On the other hand, Rohit has so far played in 224 ODIs, scoring 9115 runs at an average of 49.27 with 29 centuries and 43 fifties. His highest score is 264, which is a world record. He has also played in 32 Tests, scoring 2141 runs.

Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) won the titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019 — a record four times. Rohit will next be seen leading MI if and when the IPL 2020 commences. The 13th edition of the cash-rich league was scheduled to start on March 29 but has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Rohit wasn’t selected for India’s squad for the 2011 World Cup when the men blue went on to win the title for the second time at the ICC mega event under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, but since then he has worked hard to make a name for himself.
