Despite expectations of spin-friendly pitches, the tracks for the first two Tests between India and England have proven to be surprisingly benign. Contrary to predictions, the surface in Hyderabad only posed challenges by the fourth day, while the Vizag pitch offered minimal assistance to spinners. The anticipation was for pitches favouring India’s formidable spin quartet of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel.

Kuldeep Yadav, reflecting on the pitches, acknowledged the importance of balanced wickets in cricket. He stated, “Overall, everything is important. The fast bowlers also come into play, like you saw in the last match. So (good wickets) are good for cricket.” His remarks highlight the significance of pitches that offer opportunities for all facets of the game.

Looking ahead to the third Test in Rajkot, with the series level at 1-1, Kuldeep suggested that while recent pitches have been sporting, it doesn’t mean rank turners have been completely abandoned. He expressed hope for the return of turning tracks in the future, recognizing their potential impact.

However, Kuldeep admitted uncertainty about the reasons for the avoidance of rank turners. He mentioned his absence from the previous home series and emphasized that decisions regarding pitch conditions lie with the team management. “I have no idea. I haven’t played on rank turners. I do not know what our approach or thinking would be. It is basically the team management’s decision.”

Addressing the preference for good cricket and balanced pitches, Kuldeep highlighted the importance of both batting and bowling aspects.

He added, “When we say it is going to be a batting (friendly) wicket, we do not mean that 700-800 runs will be scored here, but it will be a better wicket compared to playing on a rank turner.”

Responding to questions about his preference for spin-friendly tracks, Kuldeep remained neutral, stating his enjoyment of playing regardless of pitch conditions. He highlighted the significance of batting and emphasized that a balanced wicket doesn’t necessarily mean high-scoring affairs. According to him, a good pitch offers opportunities for both bowlers and batsmen, contributing to a more engaging contest.
