Kunal Singh Rathore’s much-anticipated IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals didn’t unfold the way he or the team would’ve hoped. Making his first appearance in the 2025 season against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, the young wicketkeeper-batter suffered an unfortunate injury early in the match.

Kunal, who replaced an injured Nitish Rana in the playing XI, found himself in discomfort while fielding during the sixth over of KKR’s innings. On the third delivery, bowled by Akash Madhwal, Rahmanullah Gurbaz mistimed a drive, sending the ball low toward short cover.

In his effort to save the boundary, Kunal dove forward but ended up injuring his hand. He immediately appeared to be in visible pain and walked off the field clutching his hand. Initial reports suggested a split webbing, though it remains unclear whether he’ll return to bat later in the game.

It was a heartbreaking moment for the Royals’ camp, especially considering the promise Kunal has shown in domestic cricket. A consistent performer for Rajasthan since his debut in 2022, the left-handed batter has made crucial contributions across formats. He impressed during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, averaging over 35 in consecutive seasons while maintaining a strike rate above 150 in 2023.

Earlier this year, he turned heads in the DY Patil T20 Cup, scoring 109 runs in just three innings at a blistering strike rate of over 200. His aggressive yet composed style caught the attention of IPL scouts, and Rajasthan Royals secured his services for INR 30 lakhs in the 2025 auction.

While his debut outing was cut short by injury, the franchise and fans alike will be hoping this is just a minor setback in what promises to be a bright IPL journey ahead for the young southpaw.
