Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen has been named as Glenn Maxwell’s replacement in the Punjab Kings (PBKS) squad for the remainder of IPL 2025. Owen, who is currently turning heads with his performances for Babar Azam’s Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), will join the PBKS camp once he completes his commitments in the PSL.

Zalmi are still in the playoff race and will face Lahore Qalandars in their final league fixture on Friday, May 9, in Rawalpindi. Currently fifth on the table with a net run rate of -0.507, Zalmi need results to go their way to secure a spot in the playoffs, which conclude on May 18. If they make it to the final, Owen will only be available to PBKS in case the Kings themselves qualify for the IPL playoffs.

While there is no official confirmation on Owen’s arrival date, the franchise has roped him in for ₹3 crore. Glenn Maxwell, meanwhile, has been ruled out after sustaining a finger fracture during training ahead of PBKS’ match against KKR in Kolkata. The veteran Australian had endured a poor run with the bat this season, scoring just 48 runs in seven games at an average of 8 and a strike rate of 97.95.

Owen grabbed the spotlight earlier this year with a blistering century in the Big Bash League (BBL), where he equalled the record for the fastest ton—reaching the milestone in just 39 balls. Representing Hobart Hurricanes, Owen smashed 108 off 42 deliveries in the BBL final against David Warner’s Sydney Thunder, helping his team chase down 183 with 35 balls to spare. He finished as the top run-scorer of the BBL 2024-25 season, amassing 452 runs in 11 innings at an average of 45.20.
