On Thursday, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) has finally traded their former skipper, Ravichandran Ashwin to Delhi Capitals (DC) and they have got ₹1.5 crores and Karnataka spinner Jagadeesha Suchith. It ended a series of intense negotiations over the Indian spinner’s IPL future. Besides Suchith, KXIP had also asked Delhi for New Zealand pacer Trent Boult as part of the Ashwin trade-off but that did not materialize.

As per the quotes of PTI, KXIP co-owner Ness Wadia said, “Everyone is happy with this deal. We are happy, Ashwin is happy and Delhi is happy. We were in talks with three teams but have finally come to this conclusion. We wish Ashwin the very best.”

Ashwin is expected to be paid ₹7.6 crores, his auction value, by Delhi. A formal announcement will be made before the IPL transfer window closes on November 14. Under Ashwin’s captaincy, KXIP showed a lot of promise in the first half of the past two seasons of the IPL before losing momentum in the second half. They finished seventh in 2018 and sixth in 2019.  Opener KL Rahul will now be among the frontrunners to be named the captain of the franchise.

The off-spinner, who only plays the longest format for India from the past couple of years, made a strong comeback in the home Test series against South Africa as he scalped 15 wickets in the series after warming the bench in the West Indies, where Ravindra Jadeja was preferred as the sole spinner in the playing XI.

KXIP reached the semifinals in the inaugural IPL edition in 2008 before making the finals just once in 2014 when they finished runners-up. Now with the legendary Indian spinner, Anil Kumble on board in the support staff, the franchise is aiming to lift their maiden title in IPL 2020.

The IPL transfer window closes next week, on November 14, and more announcements of the trade-offs can be expected to be made before that.
