England skipper Joe Root has been on the radar of experts throughout this Ashes series for his poor conversion rate in the Test cricket. On Thursday, Root notched up his fourth half-century of the series, none of them have been converted into a three-figure mark.
However, his teammate Dawid Malan feels if Root starts to convert them into hundred, he will be scary like his counterparts around the world. Often Root is mentioned along with Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson as the best batsmen in the world.
But an unacceptable conversion rate of Yorkshire lad is pulling him out of this league, where all of them maintain an excellent ration of hundreds in comparison to fifties.
Malan said “Joe’s disappointed when he gets out whether he scores 150 or he scores 50. No matter who you are you want to be scoring 100s.”
Root got out for 83 in Sydney Test, which again underlined his inability to churn centuries.
“In his own mind he’s probably a bit disappointed he doesn’t convert more, but he’s still contributing for the team and putting the team in really good positions,” Malan added. “He still averages (52) in test cricket and the day will come when he will probably start converting as well as Steve Smith does or the other greats have done.”
“And when that happens, it will be scary to see how good he can be and how high his average can jump to.”
Australia is right back in the SCG Test after two late wickets, one of which was Root, on day one. Rain curtailed few overs from the game but once weather became pleasing England opted to bat after winning the toss.
