Manav Suthar announced his arrival on the international stage in spectacular fashion, claiming a memorable five-wicket haul on his Test debut against Afghanistan. The 23-year-old left-arm spinner achieved the milestone on Day 3 of the one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, further strengthening his reputation as one of India’s most exciting young spin talents.

Having already picked up three wickets on Day 2, Suthar returned on Monday to complete a dream debut performance. The Rajasthan spinner first removed Sharafuddin Ashraf before clean bowling Afghanistan’s resilient batter Rahmat Shah to register his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket. His disciplined line and length, combined with impressive control, consistently troubled the opposition throughout the innings.
Suthar eventually finished with outstanding figures of 6/33, producing one of the finest bowling displays by an Indian on Test debut. The performance placed him second on the list of best bowling figures by an Indian in their maiden Test appearance. He also became only the 10th Indian bowler to claim a five-wicket haul on Test debut, joining an elite group of cricketers who made an immediate impact at the highest level.

The achievement becomes even more significant when viewed in a global context. Across the history of Test cricket, only 174 players have managed a five-wicket haul on debut. Interestingly, seven of India’s ten debut five-fors have come from spin bowlers, underlining the country’s rich tradition of producing world-class spinners. With Afghanistan set to bat again, Suthar will be eager to add to his tally and further enhance an already unforgettable debut.

Born on August 3, 2002, in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, Suthar’s rise through Indian cricket has been built on consistency and hard work. The left-arm spinner first gained widespread recognition during the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season, where he finished as Rajasthan’s leading wicket-taker with 39 wickets. His performances quickly established him as one of the most promising red-ball bowlers in the domestic circuit.
The youngster continued his impressive progress with India A and was the second-highest wicket-taker in the 2023 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. Strong displays against Australia A, where he claimed eight wickets, further strengthened his case for national selection.

Before earning his India cap, Suthar had already collected 129 wickets in just 29 First-Class matches, highlighting his remarkable consistency. His development was also aided by his time with the Gujarat Titans setup in the IPL, where exposure to international stars helped refine his skills and prepare him for the challenges of Test cricket. Based on his debut performance, Indian cricket may have found its next long-term spin prospect.
