Manav Suthar delivered a dream debut in Test cricket and played a pivotal role in India’s record-breaking victory over Afghanistan in New Chandigarh. After finishing with match figures of seven wickets and earning the Player of the Match award, the young left-arm spinner revealed the simple strategy that helped him dominate the visitors throughout the contest.

The Rajasthan spinner was the standout performer as Afghanistan were bowled out for 152 in their first innings and then collapsed for just 112 in the second. India’s comprehensive innings-and-300-run victory became the biggest win in the team’s Test history, with Suthar emerging as the star of the match.

Speaking after the game, Manav Suthar explained that his initial focus was on reading the conditions before making any major adjustments to his bowling.

“Initially, my focus was on understanding how the wicket was playing. That is why I wanted to rely on my stock delivery as much as possible. Once I understood that the wicket was a little slow and required some variation in pace, I started making those adjustments,” Manav Suthar said during the post-match presentation.

The 23-year-old added that his primary objective was always to make his stock ball as effective as possible, rather than to search for extravagant variations from the outset.

“But the main idea was always to make my stock ball as effective as possible. It is a matter of great pride (being handed the second new ball). Being trusted with that responsibility means a lot,” he added.

Suthar’s disciplined approach paid rich dividends on a surface that increasingly assisted spin bowlers. His ability to consistently hit the right areas kept the Afghanistan batters under pressure and prevented them from building meaningful partnerships. Reflecting on his successful debut, the left-arm spinner highlighted patience and consistency as the biggest lessons he has learned in Test cricket.

“The biggest lesson is that consistency is everything. You have to keep bowling in the same area over and over again. I think that is the most important thing in Tests,” Manav Suthar said. “It is a format that demands a lot of patience. That is what I have learned: keep being patient, stick to your plans and keep hitting the right areas. It was a very unreal feeling representing India in Tests,” he added.

For Suthar, the match was more than just a successful debut—it was the perfect introduction to international cricket and a strong statement about his potential in the longest format.
