Mumbai Indians arrived at the MCA Stadium, Pune to take on Chennai Super Kings with their life on the line. The defending Champions had lost five out of six matches. One more loss here and they were almost on their way out of the playoff score. Luckily for them and the tournament, MI completed a comfortable win by 8 wickets over CSK to keep their hopes alive.
Chennai Super Kings had a good start courtesy of Rayudu and Raina. Once Rayudu got out, Mumbai bowled cleverly. They kept Dhoni and Raina quiet and chipped in with some low overs. Raina accelerated the innings later and CSK coasted to the total of 169/5.
Mumbai Indians openers took a contrasting approach to the chase. WI opener Evin Lewis struggled to time the ball and was searching for runs early on. Surya Kumar, on the other hand, kept finding boundaries regularly. MI lost both of them and by the 18th over they had settled Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya at the crease.
Needing 22 runs from the last two overs, there must have been some jitters in the Mumbai camp. Shardul Thakur geared up to bowl the over. The first ball to Hardik was full and wide outside off-stump, Pandya stroked it for a single. Next ball, Rohit Sharma was on strike.
Mumbai boy playing for Chennai, Thakur bowled the first ball short and wide, Rohit slashed it through the off-side to get a boundary. Next ball was full on middle stump, Rohit Sharma walked across and stroked it away with a boundary towards leg side. He struck third consecutive boundary as he bisected point and backward point to score another four.
Rohit swept the last ball of the over for another four and that virtually ended the match for Chennai Super Kings. Mumbai Indians finished the match and completed the formality.
