Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden has weighed in on how India can turn the tide in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting June 20. With the series also kicking off the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, the stakes couldn’t be higher. While India enters the contest without stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma—both recently retired from Test cricket—Hayden believes the visitors still have a fighting chance.

In an appearance on JioHotstar, Hayden noted that India’s path to a historic series win lies in capitalising on England’s vulnerability in the northern venues, particularly Leeds and Manchester, where conditions are traditionally bowler-friendly. According to Hayden, if India can adapt swiftly and secure wins in those seam-friendly Tests, the series could unexpectedly tilt in their favour.

“I don’t think England’s bowling attack is as formidable as it once was. With several key injuries and a few recent retirements, they’re looking a bit thin. The Tests in the north—where the ball moves around—are going to be crucial. Win one of those, and India can take control of the series,” Matthew Hayden said.

England’s bowling lineup is indeed battling fitness issues. Mark Wood has been ruled out of the first three Tests, Jofra Archer remains unavailable, and Gus Atkinson is still recovering from a hamstring injury. In response, England has roped in 19-year-old quick Eddie Jack to train with the squad, especially after his impressive dismissal of KL Rahul in the unofficial Test between India A and England Lions.

As India transitions into a new era under the leadership of Shubman Gill, the young squad will be tested in English conditions. But if Hayden’s prediction holds, this tour could mark the beginning of a bold new chapter for Indian Test cricket.
