Pakistan captain Salman Agha was visibly furious after a controversial run-out by Bangladesh spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz during the second ODI between the two sides at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on March 13. The dramatic incident unfolded in the 39th over of Pakistan’s innings when the visitors were well placed at 230/3.

Agha and Mohammad Rizwan had built a strong 109-run partnership for the fourth wicket, putting Bangladesh under significant pressure. Rizwan drove a straight delivery from Miraz back towards the bowler. As the ball rolled near the non-striker’s end, Agha was seen backing up towards his crease while Miraz moved in to collect it. In an unusual moment, Agha even appeared to try helping the bowler by attempting to pick up the ball.

However, Miraz quickly grabbed the ball himself and threw it at the stumps, catching Agha out of his crease. The on-field umpire, Tanvir Ahmed, referred the decision to the third umpire for confirmation.

After reviewing the footage, the third umpire ruled Agha out, sparking a furious reaction from the Pakistan skipper. Clearly frustrated, Agha threw his gloves and helmet in anger before walking off the field, visibly upset with the manner of his dismissal.

The unusual run-out quickly triggered debate among fans and analysts about both the laws of cricket and the spirit of the game. Technically, the dismissal was considered legal because the ball had not yet been declared dead at the time of the run-out attempt.

However, discussions also focused on International Cricket Council Law 41.5, which states that it is unfair for a fielder to deliberately distract, deceive or obstruct a batter after the striker has played the ball. In such cases, the umpire must judge whether the fielder intentionally altered their movement to block or mislead the batter.

While the decision stood, the incident appeared to disrupt Pakistan’s momentum. Just two balls later, Rizwan was dismissed, triggering a sudden collapse as Pakistan lost their remaining wickets quickly and were eventually bowled out for 274 in under 48 overs.
