Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League could mark the final appearance of legendary captain MS Dhoni in the iconic yellow jersey of Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni has been one of the most influential figures in the history of the IPL since the tournament began in 2008.

Over the years, he has become synonymous with CSK’s identity and success, leading the franchise to five IPL titles and establishing one of the most consistent teams in the competition. Now preparing for his 19th IPL season, Dhoni’s future continues to be a talking point among fans and experts alike. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter has played 278 IPL matches so far, scoring 5,439 runs while also building a reputation as one of the league’s most successful captains.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Pathan admitted that it is difficult to imagine the IPL — or CSK — without Dhoni’s presence. The former India cricketer also hinted that IPL 2026 could potentially be the final season for the Chennai legend.

“CSK is incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be the last time we see him in the yellow jersey and it is tough to imagine CSK and the IPL without him,” Irfan Pathan said.

Pathan also emphasised that Dhoni’s impact goes far beyond his performances on the field. According to him, the former India captain will continue to play a crucial role inside the dressing room by guiding the team’s next generation of leaders, including Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson.

“I ain’t sure how many games he will play. But his presence in the dressing room will help a lot,” Irfan Pathan added.

Meanwhile, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that overseas players such as Akeal Hosein and Dewald Brevis are expected to join the squad well before the team’s opening match of IPL 2026. Despite concerns around travel disruptions due to tensions in West Asia, Viswanathan expressed confidence that there would be no delays in the players’ arrival.
