Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have begun their IPL 2024 campaign with a resounding win over Gujarat Titans, showcasing the same aggressive brand of cricket that led to their success in the previous season. After the match, batting coach Michael Hussey shed light on the team’s mindset, emphasizing their commitment to playing proactive cricket.
“It’s definitely been a directive from Fleming to keep pushing the game forward,” remarked Michael Hussey, reflecting on CSK’s commanding victory over Gujarat Titans, where they posted a formidable total of 206/6.
This shift in batting strategy for CSK is attributed to the impact player rule introduced this season, providing teams with added resources. With the luxury of MS Dhoni batting at number eight, CSK boasts exceptional depth in their lineup, empowering top-order batsmen to adopt an aggressive approach without fear of repercussions.

“We’ve got MSD at #8, which is crazy. MSD is batting really well at the moment as well. Because we’ve got so much depth in resources, it means the players up the order, if they’re in sort of two minds, take the positive route and they’ll certainly have the backing from the coaches and the captain,” Michael Hussey added.
“We prefer you to try and push the game forward as much as you can, and if you get out in doing so, it’s fine, you’ll never be criticised for that. Flem’s talk is about playing fast,” explained Michael Hussey, shedding light on the team’s philosophy.
CSK’s batting prowess, evident from the previous season, was once again on display, with Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad laying a solid foundation in the Power Play overs. The middle-order hitters, including Shivam Dube and Ajinkya Rahane, capitalized on the strong start, playing aggressive cricket with confidence.
Rachin Ravindra, CSK’s recent addition, seamlessly embraced the team’s aggressive ethos. Mike Hussey lauded Ravindra’s positive attitude and adaptability, evident in his impactful performances against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans.

“He’s had a great start. He’s been awesome to watch. He’s just come here, full of energy, just wants to learn so much and make a positive impact on the team environment,” Michael Hussey remarked, highlighting Ravindra’s enthusiasm and potential.
“He is just enjoying it. He’s trying to soak up as much knowledge as he possibly can and he really feeds off the crowds here as well. I think once he got a couple of good shots early, his confidence just grew and he believed that yeah I can perform on this stage and he’s grown from there. I think he’s gone out there with a clear mind and a nice positive attitude,” Mike Hussey added.
