A major factor behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) strong showing in IPL 2025 has been the standout performances of their often underappreciated spinners, Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma. Despite not being the headline stars of the team, their contributions in the middle overs have been crucial in helping RCB maintain a balanced side. Their Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, however, is adamant that these two players are not simply overachieving; they are performing exactly as expected.

Krunal, who has picked up 13 wickets so far, and Suyash, who has kept his economy rate under eight runs per over in the nine games he has played, have both played pivotal roles in RCB’s successful campaign. Their ability to slow down the game during crucial moments has allowed RCB’s explosive batting lineup to chase down targets with confidence. In the recent win against Delhi Capitals, Krunal not only impressed with the ball but also with the bat, scoring his first IPL fifty since 2016.

While RCB’s spin department may not appear menacing on paper, its impact on the game has been undeniable. Bobat emphasized that both spinners are performing within their capabilities and still have room for growth.

“If you look at the performances of Krunal and Suyash, I wouldn’t describe them as punching above their weight whatsoever. They’re doing what they’re capable of,” said Mo Bobat. He also pointed out that Suyash, at just 21, is still evolving and getting better with each game. “He’s going to keep improving. Today was one of his better performances, so he’s definitely heading in the right direction.”

Krunal’s transformation has been especially noticeable this season, as he has worked on modifying his action to generate more revolutions on the ball. Bobat, who has worked closely with Krunal, acknowledged his reputation in the IPL and noted his increased aggression this season.

“Krunal’s been a fantastic spin bowler in the IPL for a long time,” Mo Bobat said. “But this year, it’s been great seeing him bowl more bravely and take more wickets.”

Bobat also mentioned that adding experienced players like Krunal was a conscious decision during the IPL mega auction. “We wanted players of that experience, guys who can stand up under pressure,” he said. Krunal’s ability to contribute tactically, both with the bat and ball, was highlighted when he passionately discussed fielding positions during the half-time interval and then delivered a match-winning performance.

RCB’s success this season has been driven by a well-rounded team effort, with Virat Kohli continuing to anchor the batting line-up. Kohli, who scored his sixth 50-plus score in 10 innings, played a key role in guiding RCB through the chase in their win over Delhi Capitals.
