England’s Moeen Ali made a significant impact in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series during the fourth Test in Manchester. Since his return to Test cricket, he had struggled to make a mark, but in this match, he built a crucial 121-run partnership with Zak Crawley, putting immense pressure on the visiting team.
Moen Ali took some time to settle down but eventually scored a brilliant 54 runs, proving vital for England’s batting. Former England captain Nasser Hussain praised Moeen Ali’s batting abilities and mentioned that the cricketer might regret not scoring more Test runs in his career. He highlighted that Ali’s talent was evident from a young age, and he always had the potential to be a top batter.

Now, with Ali batting at number three in place of the injured Ollie Pope, he aims to make the most of this opportunity and show the world his true potential.
“I think we forget what a good young batter Moeen was. Anyone watching a young Moeen growing up would say, ‘This lad can bat.’ That is the reason he has said he wants to bat at No. 3. He will end his career thinking he could have got more Test runs for the ability he has got. He wants to go out there and show the world again that he is a proper, proper batter,” Nasser Hussain stated in an interview with Sky Sports.
Regarding the batting order, Hussain also commented on the decision to move Brook to number five. While he believes Brook is a great player, he thinks number five is more suitable for him at the moment, allowing him to have a more significant impact on the team’s performance.

For now, Ali’s challenge and enjoyment in batting at number three make it the best decision for the team. During Day 2 of the match, England scored 384 runs and took a 67-run lead by the end of the day’s play. The team aims to maintain the pressure on Day 3 and level the series against their opponents. With Moeen Ali’s solid performance and determination, England has a strong chance to achieve this goal.
