Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has weighed in on the ongoing debate around MS Dhoni’s role in the Indian Premier League, making it clear that using the veteran purely as an Impact Player may not be the best move for Chennai Super Kings. Kaif believes Dhoni’s true value extends far beyond a few deliveries with the bat. In recent IPL seasons, Dhoni has largely operated in the lower middle order, often coming in at No. 7 or 8. While many have called for him to bat higher or be used as an Impact Player, Kaif feels that approach misses the bigger picture.

“Now, many people are saying that he should play as an Impact Player. I completely disagree,” Mohammad Kaif said. “There is no point. He bats at number eight, and at that position, he might face only 6 to 12 balls.”
Kaif highlighted that Dhoni’s influence behind the stumps is far more significant, especially in supporting captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. From reading the game to guiding bowlers and setting fields, Dhoni continues to play a key tactical role.

“For those few balls, he is already contributing by keeping wickets for 20 overs… helping Gaikwad with bowling changes,” he added. “Whenever the team is under pressure, MS is involved.”

The former batter also pointed out a practical aspect—Dhoni no longer plays cricket outside the IPL. Expecting him to consistently deliver explosive cameos may not be realistic at this stage of his career. “He doesn’t play cricket throughout the year, so you cannot expect the old Dhoni… to smash 30 off 10 balls regularly,” Kaif explained. “Maybe in one or two matches he can do it, but not consistently.”
Kaif also hinted that the IPL 2026 could potentially be Dhoni’s final appearance in the league, though uncertainty continues to surround his future.

“Every year we say the same thing, but this year I feel that moment might actually come,” he said. “Mahendra Singh Dhoni never shows his cards… whether he will play or step aside, no one really knows.” As always, with Dhoni, the final call remains his alone—and until then, the speculation continues.
