Rohit Sharma is set to once again play a pivotal role for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The veteran opener, retained for ₹16.30 crore ahead of the 2025 mega auction, remains one of the most influential figures in the MI setup. As the franchise’s all-time leading run-scorer, Rohit’s experience and leadership continue to be invaluable for the five-time champions.

However, his role last season raised a few eyebrows. Despite his stature and tactical acumen, Rohit was frequently used as an impact player during IPL 2025, limiting his on-field involvement. That decision sparked debate, and ahead of the new season, former India batter Mohammad Kaif has urged the franchise to rethink its approach.

Mohammad Kaif strongly believes Rohit’s presence on the field throughout the match is crucial, not just for his batting but also for his leadership inputs. He wrote, “Mumbai Indians should fully utilise the fitter and leaner Rohit Sharma. He can’t be just an impact player.” He further added, “MI will need him in crunch situations… his inputs to captain Hardik Pandya will be precious.”

Referring to a key moment from last season, Mohammad Kaif pointed out, “When Shreyas Iyer was hitting, Hardik needed Rohit next to him.” Kaif also emphasized that staying actively involved could benefit Rohit’s own batting rhythm, stating, “Full involvement in the game will help Rohit the batter too.”

From a tactical standpoint, his argument holds weight. With Hardik Pandya leading the side, Rohit’s experience in high-pressure situations could prove decisive, especially in tight contests.

Mumbai Indians begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on March 29. They will then face Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their next fixtures. With a star-studded squad featuring names like Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav, MI will rely heavily on Rohit’s all-round influence as they aim for another successful campaign.
