India’s unbeaten run in global ICC tournaments finally came to an end after a crushing defeat to the South Africa national cricket team in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in Ahmedabad on Sunday night. The 76-run loss not only dented India’s campaign but also triggered strong reactions from former cricketers and analysts across the cricketing world. Among those weighing in was former Pakistan national cricket team batting star Mohammad Yousaf, who took to social media to react to India’s defeat.

Yousaf also highlighted a prediction made earlier by former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir, which now appears close to being proven correct. Before the tournament began, Amir had stirred debate during a cricket show when he left India out of his predicted semifinalists. Despite Suryakumar Yadav and his side entering the tournament as strong title contenders, Amir believed other teams looked more balanced.

India had actually started their campaign strongly in the group stage. The defending champions won all four of their Group A matches against the United States, Pakistan, Namibia, and the Netherlands to comfortably secure a place in the Super 8 stage.

However, the heavy defeat to South Africa has significantly complicated India’s path to the semifinals. The loss left them with a worrying net run rate of -3.8, meaning that even two wins in their remaining matches may not guarantee qualification. Reacting to the result, Yousaf praised South Africa’s overall performance and also referenced Amir’s earlier prediction in a playful message on social media.

“Oye @iamamirofficial, you menace! You tormented #India on the field, and now you’re rattling them from the studio. Let them breathe; they’re already under fire,” Yousaf posted.

He also applauded South Africa’s balanced display. “South Africa, the finalists, have picked up right where they left off last #T20WorldCup. A formidable side! Top order stumbled, but the lower order delivered, and the bowling discipline was exceptional,” he added.

Amir had earlier explained his reasoning for leaving India out of his semifinal picks, stating that West Indies cricket team and South Africa currently looked stronger as complete teams in the tournament.
