During the ODI World Cup 2023, Indian pacers showcased remarkable performances, prompting former cricketer Hasan Raza to raise questions about the integrity of the umpires and players. Raza alleged that Indian bowlers were provided with a different ball and accused the hosts of manipulating the Decision Review System (DRS).

Hasan Raza’s comments drew criticism from various quarters, including former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram and Indian pace ace Mohammed Shami. Shami, who emerged as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, rebuked Raza’s remarks, highlighting his tendency to undermine India’s success and exhibit jealousy. He emphasised that such jealousy undermines the spirit of the game and impedes mutual appreciation for success.

Mohammed Shami’s comments echoed sentiments expressed earlier by former cricketer Aakash Chopra, who labelled Raza’s claims as comedic. Expressing similar disapproval, Akram condemned Raza’s statements, asserting that they brought disrepute to the country and urged him to refrain from such baseless allegations.

“Actually, they have made cricket a joke because we don’t enjoy each other’s success. You become too happy when you are being praised, but when you lose, you feel that you have been cheated…Jalan toh puri dikhti hai wo. Itna jalane se kon se results mil jaane hain (jealousy is evident. You can never get good results with this amount of jealousy),” remarked Mohammed Shami in an interview with News18.

Mohammed Shami sustained an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup but continued to contribute to the team’s campaign. Following the tournament’s conclusion, he took a hiatus from the game to address his injury concerns. Reports suggested that Shami might seek treatment in Europe, although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not divulged specifics regarding his rehabilitation.

As Shami remains in India, his participation in the upcoming Test series against England hangs in uncertainty. While there is speculation about his potential return during the Indian Premier League (IPL), no definitive timeline has been established. The BCCI continues to monitor his recovery closely, with updates expected in due course.
