Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has found himself in the spotlight off the field after receiving a notice to appear for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing before the Election Commission. The notice was issued on Monday from Kartju Nagar School in the Jadavpur area of South Kolkata, where Shami is registered as a voter under Ward No. 93 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, which falls within the Rashbehari Assembly constituency.

According to sources cited by NDTV, the notice was issued after Shami allegedly failed to fill out the voter enumeration form correctly. The hearing has been scheduled for January 9-11. Shami, however, could not attend the initial hearing on Monday as he is currently in Rajkot representing Bengal in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, continuing his domestic cricket commitments.

Though Shami hails originally from Uttar Pradesh, his long-standing association with Kolkata dates back to his early cricketing days. Acting on his coach’s advice, he moved to the city at a young age, a decision that proved pivotal to his career.

Mohammed Shami was spotted by renowned coach Sambaran Banerjee, earned selection in the Bengal Under-22 side, and gradually climbed the ranks. His early years also saw him feature in tournaments such as the Mohun Bagan Cricket Cup, laying the foundation for his rise to international cricket.

Despite being in decent form in domestic cricket, Shami was recently left out of India’s squads for the ODI and T20I series against New Zealand, making the timing of the notice particularly noteworthy.

In a parallel development, actor and Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament Dev, also known as Deepak Adhikari, has reportedly received a similar SIR hearing notice. Sources indicate that three other members of his family have also been served notices, although the exact dates and times for their hearings are yet to be confirmed.

There has been no official response from Dev or his family so far. However, the ruling Trinamool Congress has alleged that issuing such notices to a sitting MP and public figure amounts to harassment.

Dev, whose ancestral home is in Ghatal in West Midnapore, later moved to Mumbai due to his father’s work before settling permanently in Kolkata because of his acting career. A Tollywood superstar and a three-time MP from Ghatal, Dev currently resides at the South City residential complex in Kolkata. As the situation unfolds, both cases have sparked discussions around voter verification processes involving prominent public figures.
