Renowned pace bowler Mohammed Shami is facing the likelihood of missing the initial two Tests in the upcoming five-match series against England, scheduled to commence on January 25. Shami revealed that he played through pain during the ODI World Cup 2023, leading to advice for a break from cricket. Presently, he is in the recovery phase from an ankle injury that also ruled him out of the two-match Test series against South Africa.

Reports indicate that the 33-year-old has yet to initiate bowling sessions in the nets. Officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) anticipate Shami proving his fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) before being considered for the Test squad. If his recovery progresses positively, Shami may join the team for the third Test in Rajkot.

A source within the Indian board conveyed, “Shami hasn’t even started to bowl; he will have to go to NCA and prove his fitness. He looks doubtful for the first two Tests against England.”

In the potential absence of Shami, contenders like Prasidh Krishna or Mukesh Kumar are being considered to step into the playing XI for the initial two Test matches against England. Kumar showcased an impressive performance with the ball in the second Test against South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town. Meanwhile, Prasidh’s earlier performance faced criticism from skipper Rohit Sharma during the first Test in Centurion.

With all other Test players deemed fit for the series against England, the team is set to reconvene in Hyderabad following the conclusion of the series against Afghanistan on January 17.

While the selectors have not yet disclosed the squad for the Test series, attention is drawn to the performances in the first round of the Ranji Trophy. Notably, Cheteshwar Pujara displayed sublime form, Hanuma Vihari scored a half-century, and Riyan Parag made a remarkable 155 runs off 87 deliveries.
