MS Dhoni has finally set the record straight about the leadership dynamics at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad last season. While there has been speculation that Dhoni, with his vast experience and iconic status, continues to pull the strings from behind the stumps, the former CSK skipper insists that Gaikwad is firmly in charge, making “99 percent” of the decisions.
In an interview with JioHotstar, the five-time IPL-winning captain explained his approach to guiding Gaikwad while allowing the young leader to take the reins. Dhoni revealed that before the IPL 2024 season began, he had a candid conversation with Gaikwad, emphasizing the importance of independent decision-making.
“Before the start of the tournament, I told him, ‘If I am giving you advice, it doesn’t mean you have to follow it. First and foremost, I will try to stay away,’” MS Dhoni shared.
The veteran wicketkeeper-batter admitted that while he does provide occasional inputs to Gaikwad, they are merely suggestions. He made it clear that the tactical calls — including field placements and bowling changes — are ultimately Gaikwad’s decisions.

MS Dhoni further elaborated, “A lot of people said maybe I am doing all the background (decisions), but all the decisions were his. Only thing I said was ‘have a very good idea about angles when it comes to the field.’ You tell me you want a deep point, and according to the batsman, wicket, and the bowler, I will set where it needs to be.”
Reflecting on the challenging IPL 2024 season, where CSK narrowly missed a playoff spot due to an inferior net run-rate compared to Royal Challengers Bangalore, Dhoni praised Gaikwad’s maturity. “Being a wicketkeeper, especially if the captain is fielding on the outside, they need a focal point. So, people thought I was still making the calls, but Ruturaj was doing 99 percent of it,” Dhoni added.
When asked why CSK chose Gaikwad as their long-term captain, Dhoni highlighted the stability that batters typically bring to leadership roles. He acknowledged that while bowlers can be influential leaders, the risk of injuries makes them less reliable for sustained leadership.

“Ruturaj has been part of us for quite some time. He has done well for us. His temperament is very good, he’s very calm, very composed,” MS Dhoni noted. Dhoni also emphasized the strong rapport between Gaikwad and head coach Stephen Fleming, which has helped create a supportive environment. “Him and Flem get along very well. At the end of the day, only Ruturaj can justify the role. We can only give him the chance to prove himself,” Dhoni concluded.
This vote of confidence from Dhoni, a player synonymous with calmness and strategy, is significant. It not only strengthens Gaikwad’s position as a leader but also reaffirms CSK’s belief in nurturing and trusting young talent.
