Chennai Super Kings have been dealt an early setback ahead of IPL 2026, with MS Dhoni likely to miss the opening phase of the tournament due to a calf strain. The franchise confirmed that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is expected to be unavailable for at least the first two weeks of the season.

This means Dhoni will sit out CSK’s opening clash against Rajasthan Royals, a fixture that already carries plenty of intrigue. Earlier, fans spotted Dhoni batting during a practice session, with Sanju Samson behind the stumps. However, the franchise has now clarified that Dhoni won’t feature in the initial games.

In his absence, Samson is expected to step in as the primary wicketkeeper. The former Rajasthan Royals captain joined CSK in a high-profile trade deal, adding both experience and flexibility to the squad led by Ruturaj Gaikwad. His presence becomes even more crucial now, as CSK look to maintain balance early in the campaign.

Interestingly, the CSK vs RR clash will also see familiar faces lining up against their former teams. Ravindra Jadeja, who moved back to Rajasthan, and Samson will both be under the spotlight in what promises to be a compelling contest in Guwahati.

Dhoni’s absence also adds fuel to ongoing speculation that IPL 2026 could be his final season. The 44-year-old has already hinted at his declining fitness, particularly during a recent fan event in Chennai, where he admitted that his body is “on the way down.” Over the past few seasons, he has adapted his role, batting lower down the order and focusing on impactful cameos rather than long innings.

CSK’s recent squad decisions further suggest a gradual transition. Alongside Samson, the franchise has invested in young wicketkeeping talent, indicating preparations for life beyond Dhoni. While nothing has been officially confirmed, the signs point toward a changing of the guard.

Despite limited appearances last season, Dhoni’s legacy remains unmatched. With over 5,400 IPL runs and a reputation for finishing games under pressure, his influence extends far beyond numbers. For now, CSK will hope for a swift recovery, knowing that even a partially fit Dhoni can change the course of a season.
