MS Dhoni has once again dismissed retirement talks, making it clear that he continues to take things “one year at a time” when it comes to his cricketing future. Despite growing speculation from fans and pundits about his declining returns, the former India captain has signalled that he’s in no rush to call it quits just yet.

The rumour mill went into overdrive after MS Dhoni’s parents were spotted in the stands during Chennai Super Kings’ home clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 5. Many assumed it was a farewell gesture. But Dhoni clarified that he’s giving his body time — around eight months post-IPL 2025 — to determine whether he can continue playing at the age of 44.

“No, not right now. I’m still playing the IPL,” MS Dhoni said on Raj Shamani’s podcast. “I take it one year at a time. I’m 43 now. When the IPL ends, I’ll be 44, and after that I’ll have 10 months to decide. It’s not me making the decision—it’s my body.”

Head coach Stephen Fleming was also quizzed about Dhoni’s future after the match against Delhi Capitals. True to his calm demeanour, Fleming simply responded, “I have no idea. I’m just enjoying working with him still. He’s still going strong. I don’t even ask these days.”
Dhoni, who has copped flak for coming in too late in recent games, walked out at No. 7 against Delhi. However, he couldn’t quite find his rhythm, scoring 30 off 26 balls in a losing cause as CSK fell short by 25 runs.

Defending that move, Stephen Fleming noted, “The intent was there. But once he got out there, the ball began to grip a little more. We knew it would be easier in the first half and would slow down later. It wasn’t easy batting in the second innings.”
