Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2025 journey came to a bitter end on Wednesday, as they became the first team to be eliminated from the tournament following a four-wicket loss to Punjab Kings at Chepauk. The defeat left fans heartbroken, but what caught the eye after the match was a lengthy, animated chat between CSK skipper MS Dhoni and CEO Kasi Viswanathan.

With speculation rife that this might be Dhoni’s final IPL season, the conversation has naturally sparked curiosity across the cricketing world. Despite the loss, Dhoni appeared in good spirits, engaging with team management and acknowledging the Chepauk crowd that has stood by him season after season.

Earlier in the match, CSK posted 190 on the board after being sent in to bat first. While it was their best batting effort of the season, they were bowled out with four balls remaining — a detail Dhoni didn’t overlook.

“I think it was a good total, but just 10–15 runs short of what was needed on this surface,” MS Dhoni said at the post-match presentation. “It was one of the better wickets we had at home this year, and we probably needed to push a bit more.”
Punjab, led by solid half-centuries from Shreyas Iyer (72 off 41) and Prabhsimran Singh (54 off 36), chased down the target with two balls to spare. However, it was Yuzvendra Chahal’s incredible spell—4 for 32, including a hat-trick—that turned the tide. His late burst ensured CSK couldn’t stretch their total into a match-winning one.

With the win, Punjab climbed to second place with 13 points, while CSK languish at the bottom of the table with just four. As their campaign nears its final chapter, Chennai will travel to Bengaluru for their next game against RCB on Saturday, May 4.
