A Mumbai court has issued orders for the police to investigate allegations of molestation against Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw, lodged by social media influencer Sapna Gill. The directive follows Gill’s claim that Shaw molested her during an altercation at a suburban pub in Andheri back in February.

Despite her initial complaint to the Andheri police, alleging molestation and harm caused by a dangerous weapon, no FIR was registered due to insufficient evidence, according to authorities who reviewed CCTV footage and witness statements.

Displeased with the police’s response, Gill sought legal recourse, prompting the metropolitan magistrate’s court in Mumbai to intervene. In response, the court has instructed the police to probe Gill’s allegations against the 24-year-old cricketer, who is currently representing the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024. The court has set a deadline of June 19 for the police to submit their investigation report.

While Gill stands by her accusation of molestation against Shaw, the cricketer vehemently denies the claims. Police investigations revealed CCTV footage showing Gill wielding a baseball bat, purportedly chasing Shaw’s car and causing damage, but no evidence of molestation was found. Witness statements aligned with the police’s findings.

Initially, Gill sought legal action against the police for their failure to register an FIR based on her complaint. However, the court dismissed this plea and instead ordered a fresh investigation into her molestation allegations against Shaw and his associate Ashish Yadav. Gill had requested charges be filed under IPC sections 509 (insult to modesty), 354 (molestation), and 324 (causing hurt by dangerous means).
