The hero of Bangladesh’s victory against Sri Lanka, Mushfiqur Rahim reckons that the Tigers have gained significant momentum after their historic five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, who now have an eye on going with all guns blazing in the ongoing Nidahas Trophy.

Mushfiqur scored an unbeaten half-century and made sure that Bangladesh registers a record chase in Twenty20 Internationals as they chased down 215 to silence the home crowd in Colombo. The Tigers kept their hopes alive for a berth in the final of the T20I tri-series comprising India. After their loss to the men in blue in their opening game of the tournament, Bangladesh needed to come up with something special to humble the hosts.

During the halfway mark it looked like Sri Lanka will outplay the visitors before an all-round effort by the batsmen, led by Mushfiqur himself with an unbeaten 35-ball 72. More than anything, it was the huge win against Sri Lanka that helped Bangladesh regain their confidence that was eluding them since their form began to dip both at home and away in the format.

Mushfiqur conceded how badly they needed that win and it was high time they moved forward carrying that momentum that he considered was crucial in the shortest format. He said, “In this short format momentum is crucial. I hope we can carry on with it in our next two matches as we have got confidence back.”

He further added, “I don’t like a lot of noise [appreciation and lofty talks] after just one win. The wicket was good to bat and someone will be able to play such a knock. When you are playing for 13 years it is natural that you will make an improvement. I just want to return what cricket has given me with my performance.”

Lastly, Rahim showered praises for the batting unit but said that if Bangladesh is to beat India in their next match, their bowlers need to step up. He concluded, “We have to bowl well against India. They are a strong side but if we can bowl well we can surely count on our chances against them.”
