India have changed their T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against the West Indies, with Mumbai Indians all-rounder Naman Dhir replacing Washington Sundar. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development through a release on Thursday, October 1. The decision to withdraw Sundar from the home series was made with India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand in mind.

India are scheduled to play five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests in New Zealand from October 22 to December 1. With the Test series forming an important part of the team’s preparations, Sundar will now return to domestic cricket and represent Tamil Nadu in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season.
The Ranji Trophy season is scheduled to begin on October 11, giving Sundar an opportunity to get valuable red-ball cricket under his belt ahead of the New Zealand Tests.

“Naman Dhir has been named as his replacement in the T20I squad,” the release added.
Dhir’s inclusion marks his first call-up to India’s T20I squad. The all-rounder, who represents Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has already played two ODIs for India but is yet to make his T20I debut. The upcoming series against the West Indies could therefore provide Dhir with an opportunity to make his first appearance in India’s shortest format.
The five-match T20I series is scheduled to begin on October 6 in Lucknow. India will be hoping to use the series to assess their options in the format while also managing players ahead of a busy international schedule.
