The emergency unfolded around two ours into the Dubai-Tel Aviv flight. The aircraft transmitted the general emergency code 7700 before subsequently sending the 7500 code associated with unlawful interference. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft losing a significant amount of altitude during the incident.
Israeli officials have alleged that the co-pilot attacked Machchhar and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls. However, the exact circumstances and motive remain under investigation, and authorities have urged caution against premature conclusions. The UAE has ordered an investigation into whether the incident involved terrorist activity, prior planning or another motive.

Passengers and crew members intervened during the confrontation, while two off-duty Flydubai pilots travelling as passengers helped take control of the aircraft. The plane was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where Machchhar and the co-pilot were taken to hospital. Machchhar underwent surgery and was later reported to be in stable condition.
Machchhar has served as a Flydubai Boeing 737 captain since 2022 and previously spent 11 years with SpiceJet. His professional background includes extensive experience flying Boeing 737 aircraft.
The incident has since prompted tributes from sporting and political figures, while investigations continue across the countries involved. For now, the focus remains on Machchhar’s recovery and establishing the full circumstances surrounding the extraordinary mid-air emergency.
