Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes Brendon McCullum’s willingness to genuinely adapt his coaching philosophy will now be under sharper scrutiny following England’s bruising 4–1 Ashes defeat in Australia. While McCullum has repeatedly insisted that he is open to evolving, Hussain has questioned whether that adaptability will truly come into play after Bazball was found wanting in the toughest conditions.

England’s ultra-aggressive approach, which brought early success and renewed excitement to Test cricket, unravelled Down Under. The lack of tactical flexibility, combined with questionable preparation and decision-making, fuelled intense debate over whether Bazball has become more ideology than strategy. In the aftermath of the loss at the SCG, Hussain did not shy away from addressing the issue head-on during a frank exchange with McCullum.
“Can you personally change, or is it the Brendon McCullum philosophy? Can you change your ways, or is this how you are going to play?” Nasser Hussain asked, pressing the England coach on whether conviction had tipped into rigidity. McCullum clearly bristled at the suggestion, responding that he took offence to the question and stressing that his methods had been misunderstood.

“I have conviction in my methods, but I am not rigid in my beliefs,” Brendon McCullum said, pushing back against the idea that Bazball leaves no room for adjustment.

Writing later in his column for The Athletic, Hussain revisited the exchange and explained why the question mattered more than ever. He acknowledged that McCullum is right to back his philosophy, particularly given the positive impact it initially had on England’s Test side. However, Hussain argued that elite teams must balance belief with adaptability, especially when conditions and opposition demand a different approach.
“McCullum took umbrage when I asked him if he was willing to change,” Nasser Hussain wrote. “His point was that he has always been prepared to evolve, but whether he means it will be key now.”

For Hussain, the Ashes defeat represents a defining moment. England’s next phase, he believes, will hinge not on abandoning Bazball entirely, but on McCullum and the leadership group proving they can adapt when the game — and the situation — requires it.
