Shreyas Iyer produced a captain’s masterclass in Lucknow, smashing his maiden T20I century to guide India to a dominant eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the first T20I on Tuesday. The unbeaten 102 off just 43 balls helped India chase down 172 in 17.3 overs, giving them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series and extending their winning streak in T20Is to 10 matches. India were in early trouble at 35/2 when Iyer arrived at the crease in the third over.

Rather than allowing the situation to dictate his approach, the India captain took his time before launching a brutal counterattack. The pitch was not particularly easy for batting compared to the surfaces used during the ODI series, making Iyer’s controlled aggression even more impressive.
Iyer reached his century from 42 balls, surpassing his previous T20I best of 80 not out against England in Bristol earlier this year. He also became the fastest Indian to score a T20I hundred against West Indies. More importantly, Iyer joined an elite group of India captains to score a men’s T20I century, following Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.

The landmark brought a standing ovation from the Lucknow crowd. Iyer removed his helmet and acknowledged the applause before receiving congratulations from Ishan Kishan, who provided valuable support during the chase. Even some West Indies players applauded the outstanding innings.
Ishan Kishan played an important supporting role as India recovered from their early setbacks. Once Iyer found his rhythm, boundaries began flowing regularly and the target quickly appeared insignificant. Earlier, West Indies had managed 171 despite an aggressive start. Shai Hope attacked Mayank Yadav in the second over, hitting four boundaries, but India responded quickly. Arshdeep Singh bowled Kamil Pooran to provide the first breakthrough before Shimron Hetmyer was run out in the sixth over.

Axar Patel then removed Rovman Powell, leaving West Indies in trouble. Sherfane Rutherford briefly changed the momentum, smashing 56 off 34 balls, including several boundaries against Kuldeep Yadav and Axar. Hope also scored a brisk 52 off 37 before Naman Dhir claimed his first T20I wicket. The debutant off-spinner eventually finished with impressive figures of 3/31.
Kuldeep Yadav added two wickets, while Ishan Kishan produced an excellent catch to dismiss Rutherford. Dhir completed his three-wicket haul by removing Shamar Springer, while Axar Patel finished the innings by dismissing Akeal Hosein.

West Indies’ total of 171 ultimately proved well below par. Rutherford had suggested after the innings that his team were around 20 runs short, but India’s effortless chase indicated they needed considerably more to challenge the hosts. The night, however, belonged to Shreyas Iyer. After losing six of his first seven matches as India’s T20I captain, Iyer has now led the team to 10 consecutive victories. His unbeaten century not only settled the opening game but also gave India the perfect start to the five-match series.

India needed just 8 runs to win, but Ishan Kishan didn’t go for a big shot. Instead, he took a single and handed the strike to Shreyas Iyer.
