Shubman Gill’s transformation as India’s Test captain has been nothing short of extraordinary, and his masterclass at Edgbaston in the second Test against England has firmly silenced all doubts about his leadership and batting prowess on foreign soil. Coming into the series, Gill carried the burden of an underwhelming overseas Test record. Many had questioned the selectors’ decision to hand him the captaincy.

But if his century at Headingley in his first Test as skipper was a statement, his performance at Edgbaston was nothing less than a roaring declaration. In the first innings, Gill batted with supreme authority and composure, compiling a magnificent 269 off 387 balls. His innings, laced with 30 elegant boundaries and three towering sixes, broke Virat Kohli’s record for the highest score by an Indian Test captain. He also became the second youngest Indian skipper to notch up a double century in Tests.

What made his feat more remarkable was his appetite for more. Returning in the second innings with a lead already in place, Gill produced another gem—a fluent century off just 129 deliveries. His hundred was chanceless, built on timing, placement, and calm aggression.

With that, Gill joined an elite club of cricketers. He became only the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to score a century and a double century in the same Test. He also etched his name in World Test Championship history, becoming just the second player—after Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne—to achieve this rare double. Globally, only two others—Graham Gooch and Kumar Sangakkara—have managed to score 250 and a hundred in the same Test match. Now, Gill stands proudly beside them.

Commentating on Sky Sports, former England captain Nasser Hussain aptly summed up the moment: “Finds the gap, takes the single. A hundred in the first Test, a double hundred and another hundred in the second. The Indian captain is in the form of his life. Sunil Gavaskar the only other Indian to do it. Gill has been chanceless and elegant in both innings.”

India’s young captain has not just led from the front—he’s redefining it.
