One of two Norwegian women, who were present in the hotel, has complained of rape on Saturday night, on which Gunathilaka’s friend Sandeep Jude Selliah (26-year-old) has been arrested.

However, a police officer said that the 27-year-old Sri Lankan cricketer wasn’t aware of that incident as he was sleeping at that time. The officer further told that police are not charging against the Sri Lankan cricketer at the moment.

The officer told AFP, “He has said he was asleep and was not aware of what had taken place between his friend and the Norwegian woman. Police are not pressing charges against Gunathilaka at the moment, but the case record will be presented to a magistrate on Thursday.”

Meanwhile, Selliah was arrested soon after the Norwegian woman complained to police on Sunday.

Police also said that the woman left Sri Lanka after lodging the complaint. The incident happened in the same hotel where the Sri Lankan cricket team and the visiting South African cricket team are staying.

According to the police report, Gunathilaka booked two rooms at the hotel for that night where the incident happened. As it was the violation of Sri Lanka Cricket’s code of conduct of players, Gunathilaka has been suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Sunday night.

However, Gunathilaka was allowed to play the running second Test between Sri Lanka and South Africa at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground (Colombo). He missed out from the 15-member Sri Lanka ODI squad for the upcoming five-match home ODI series against South Africa, starting from this Sunday (July 29).

After the police investigation process will end, SLC will conduct a disciplinary hearing on Gunathilaka.
