All players of the Indian team on Sunday came out to lock horns with the West Indies team wearing black armbands in the first ODI of the three-match series to mourn the death of iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar. Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday. However, the black armband was not visible on the arm of the fielding Indian fast bowler, Mohammed Siraj, who drew the first wicket for India by dismissing Shai Hope in the third over itself.

Some of the political groups on Twitter were very angry as to why Siraj took such a step unlike the rest of the players. Mohammed Siraj got India the first wicket and India’s opener Shai Hope was bowled. It was investigated and then known that the band was broken and hence the pacer could not wear it but Political groups took Twitter on fire to blame Siraj unnecessarily.

Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Vice-President Rajeev Shukla said, “Indian Players will sport black armbands in the first ODI against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium to condole the demise of Lata Mangeshkar. The national flag will fly at half-mast”.

Lata Mangeshkar was an ardent cricket fan and she never missed an opportunity to watch cricket matches from stadiums across the globe. The iconic singer had a cordial relationship with several Indian cricketers, including Sunil Gavaskar and Tendulkar.

In fact, Lata Mangeshkar did a concert to help raise funds for cash rewards for the victorious Indian cricket team that won the 1983 World Cup. Kapil’s Devils needed to be celebrated and Lata Mangeshkar to do a pro-bono concert in the national capital’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, as a result, the BCCI collected enough money and each of the 14 members got ₹1 lakh each as a cash award.

The three-match ODI series between India and West Indies will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.  Yesterday, batsmen Ishan Kishan and Shahrukh Khan were added to the Indian squad after four India players — opener Shikhar Dhawan, fellow batsmen Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer, and standby bowler Navdeep Saini — tested positive for Covid-19 last week, as well as three members of the support staff.
