While cricket fans around the world are focusing on the ongoing 2022 T20 World Cup, Team India has managed to keep one eye on the future as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand and Bangladesh. India is set to play three T20Is and as many ODIs in New Zealand in a tour that will be commencing on November 18, just a few days after the 2022 T20 World Cup final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
After this, India will be traveling to Bangladesh for three ODIs and a couple of Tests in their final assignment of the year in December. While India has named a full-strength squad for the tour of Bangladesh, a number of senior players have been rested for the series in New Zealand which led to Hardik Pandya being named as the captain in the T20I series while Shikhar Dhawan has been named as ODI captain.
Despite some stars missing and many new players getting a chance, a notable omission is Prithvi Shaw. Widely regarded among the most talented batters in the Indian cricket circuit, Shaw was left out of all four squads across the three formats.
Following the squad announcement, Prithvi Shaw was evidently emotional and shared a cryptic post on his Instagram story. Posting a picture of Lord Sai Baba, Shaw wrote ‘Hope you are watching everything Sai Baba.’
Chief selector Chetan Sharma explained Shaw’s exclusion from the quad by stating that he will get a chance in the national toon soon and the selectors are in contact with him. He explained, “We basically are looking at him, and we are in constant touch with him, he’s doing well. There is nothing wrong with him at all.”
He further added, “The thing is we have to look at the set-up, we are trying to give chances to those who are performing and are already in the set-up. He will definitely get his chances very soon the way he is batting, even whenever we are there for matches we are talking to him.”
Prithvi Shaw played for Team India last in July 2021 in the ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka. He has not played a Test match for the national team since the 2022 Adelaide Test.
