Former India U-19 captain Prithvi Shaw has once again proven his batting brilliance, this time in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 while representing Maharashtra. Playing only his second match for his new team, Shaw etched his name into the record books by smashing the third-fastest double century in Ranji Trophy history during the Elite Group B clash against Chandigarh at the Sector 16 Stadium on October 27.

Displaying a perfect blend of aggression and timing, the right-handed opener reached the 200-run mark in just 141 balls, sending the Chandigarh bowlers on a leather hunt. His explosive innings included 28 fours and 3 sixes, as he dominated the second innings with trademark confidence and fluency.

The record for the fastest double century in Ranji history still belongs to Tanmay Agarwal, who achieved the milestone in only 119 balls for Hyderabad against Arunachal Pradesh in January 2024. He is followed by Ravi Shastri, who took just 123 balls to reach his double ton for Mumbai against Baroda in the 1985 season — a match where the legendary all-rounder struck 13 fours and 13 sixes while batting at No. 6 for the Sunil Gavaskar-led side.
| PLAYER | TEAM | BALLS | AGAINST | VENUE | YEAR |
| Tanmay Agarwal | Hyderabad | 119 | Arunachal Pradesh | Hyderabad | 2024 |
| Ravi Shastri | Mumbai | 123 | Baroda | Mumbai (WS) | 1985 |
| Prithvi Shaw | Maharashtra | 141 | Chandigarh | Chandigarh | 2025 |
| Rahul Singh | Hyderabad | 143 | Nagaland | Sovima | 2024 |
| Snehal Kauthankar | Goa | 146 | Arunachal Pradesh | Porvorim | 2024 |
Rahul Singh of Hyderabad sits fourth on the list, having reached 200 off 143 balls against Nagaland in 2024. On the global stage, Afghanistan’s Shafiqullah Shinwari holds the overall record, achieving a double century in a staggering 89 balls during the 2017-18 domestic season.

For Shaw, this knock carries extra significance. After leaving Mumbai, the most successful team in Ranji history, he joined Maharashtra ahead of the current season. His debut outing against Kerala earlier this month was underwhelming, where he managed just a four-ball duck and 8 runs in the first innings. However, this incredible comeback underscores his hunger to make a statement and revive his red-ball career.
The 25-year-old, who remains the youngest Indian to score a Test century on debut, will now aim to convert this double century into a triple — something he has already achieved once before, when he scored a 379 for Mumbai against Assam in 2023.
