Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli once again reminded the world why they remain India’s most trusted pair in white-ball cricket. The veteran duo delivered match-winning performances in the Sydney ODI against Australia, silencing critics who had questioned their place in India’s long-term ODI plans. Rohit produced a captain’s knock, scoring an unbeaten 121 off 125 balls, while Kohli, after two rare ducks earlier in the series, bounced back with a fluent 74* as India cruised to a nine-wicket win over the world champions.

Their effortless 167-run partnership was a throwback to India’s golden era of batting dominance. With the 2027 ODI World Cup still two years away, discussions have intensified around whether the two stalwarts will continue to feature in India’s one-day setup. The Indian team has already undergone transitions in Tests and T20Is, with both Rohit and Kohli stepping away from those formats earlier this year.
Now, as selectors begin charting plans for the next World Cup cycle, the focus is firmly on maintaining the right blend of experience and youth. However, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes there should be no debate about their inclusion.

Speaking to India Today, he said, “The moment they made themselves available for this trip, it was clear they want to be there for the 2027 World Cup. Irrespective of form, their ability and experience make them automatic picks if they’re available for selection.”

Rohit’s innings in Sydney reflected his trademark composure — patient early on, before accelerating seamlessly to dominate Australia’s attack. Kohli, on the other hand, looked at ease from the first over, playing elegant drives and calculated singles to regain his rhythm. Their partnership not only sealed the series finale but also restored India’s batting confidence after consecutive losses.

Reflecting on the partnership, Rohit Sharma said, “It was a fantastic stand after a long time. We hadn’t had a hundred-run partnership in a while, and it came at the right moment. With Shreyas missing, we knew the added responsibility was on us, and we really enjoyed batting together.”
The win not only ended the series on a high but also reignited hopes that India’s most reliable duo could well lead another World Cup charge in 2027.
