Virat Kohli’s T20 strike rate has sparked fiery discussions once again. While some criticize his scoring pace, former head coach Ravi Shastri has emerged as a staunch defender. Currently leading the run-scorers chart in IPL 2024 with a commendable 500 runs at an average of 71.43, Kohli has silenced some doubters. His strike rate of 147.49, though a target for some, isn’t a bad showing in today’s T20 landscape.
However, a section of fans remain critical of his tendency to slow down after brisk starts. Ravi Shastri, who coached Kohli during his reign, recently offered support. He highlights the challenge of maintaining a high strike rate when wickets tumble around the batsman. “When wickets fall around you, your strike rate is likely to drop,” Shastri told Stake.com during IPL 2024.

This statement comes after Kohli’s phenomenal 70* off 44 balls against Gujarat Titans. This match-winning knock, alongside Will Jacks’ blistering 100* off 41 balls, helped RCB chase down a mammoth 201-run target in just 16 overs.
Despite Kohli’s heroics, RCB’s season has been a disappointment. They currently languish at the bottom of the table with just three wins in ten games. Their batting unit has underperformed as a whole, with Kohli emerging as the lone bright spark. “When you look at RCB, there are only 1 or 2 consistent performers,” Ravi Shastri acknowledges.

Widely regarded as one of the best commentators, Ravi Shastri often lends his voice to capture India’s most thrilling cricketing moments in ICC events. He sheds light on his commentary preparation process, stating, “I speak what I see and do the right amount of preparation on crucial aspects such as the event and the teams playing.”
Amidst murmurs of Kohli’s potential exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad, the BCCI named him among the 15 players selected for the marquee event on April 30th. The debate surrounding Kohli’s strike rate is likely to continue, but Shastri’s support and Kohli’s recent performances offer a strong counterpoint.
