In absence of Rohit Sharma, Shaw got the opportunity to open the innings along with Mayank Agarwal in the first Test in Wellington. However, he failed to score the expected amount of runs in the opening Test, getting dismissed cheaply in both his outings. However, with Shaw in an injury scare, there have been rumors of Shubman Gill opening for India in the 2nd Test.

During a pre-match press conference on Friday, Shastri said, “Ravindra Jadeja or Ravichandran Ashwin, we will take that call tomorrow in the morning. Prithvi is ready to go (after recovering from an injury scare).”

Shaw had a poor outing in the first Test in Wellington, getting dismissed cheaply in both the innings. Tim Southee got the youngster for a meager score of 16 with an unplayable delivery in the first innings. Shaw also found Trent Boult’s short ball challenging to negotiate when he was on 14 in the second essay.

Talking about Shaw’s struggle with the bat in Wellington, Shastri said the youngster needs to learn how to adapt to conditions quickly.

Describing the improvement of the youngster, the Indian head coach said, “Everyone has to adapt in these conditions. No two conditions are the same. I mean a pitch on day one in India will be different from a pitch in England or New Zealand. You have to adapt. Not just Prithvi, everyone.”
