As the Indian Premier League 2026 season approaches, all eyes are once again on MS Dhoni, who is set to return in the iconic yellow jersey of Chennai Super Kings. Just months away from turning 45, Dhoni continues to defy age and expectations, preparing for what is widely anticipated to be his final IPL season.

CSK have already begun transitioning into a new era. With Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the side as full-time captain and the addition of Sanju Samson strengthening the squad, the franchise is clearly planning for the future. However, Dhoni’s presence remains central—not just as a player, but as a guiding force within the team setup.
While questions continue to surface around his role in the playing XI, Dhoni’s value goes far beyond numbers. His sharp cricketing mind, calm decision-making, and unmatched experience make him a crucial asset, particularly for a young captain like Gaikwad navigating leadership responsibilities.

Backing Dhoni’s inclusion without hesitation, Ravichandran Ashwin made his stance clear. “If MS Dhoni is part of the CSK squad, he walks straight into the XI,” Ashwin stated, underlining the veteran’s enduring importance. He further added, “If he didn’t want to play, he would have retired already. The fact that he’s still here means he believes he can contribute.”

Ashwin also highlighted Dhoni’s commitment, revealing that the former captain has been training consistently in the lead-up to the season. “He’s been practising for months. That shows his intent,” he noted.
From a tactical standpoint, MPS Dhoni is expected to slot in at No. 7, continuing his role as a finisher. However, Ravichandran Ashwin suggested there could be flexibility in his batting position depending on match situations.

“You can promote him in the Powerplay if needed, but it depends on how his body responds,” he explained. Importantly, Dhoni is also likely to continue as the team’s wicketkeeper, allowing Samson to operate in the field. “If they didn’t plan to play Dhoni, he wouldn’t be practising with the squad,” Ravichandran Ashwin pointed out.
While Dhoni may not be the same explosive batter he once was, his ability to deliver in crunch moments remains intact. More than anything, his presence provides balance, leadership, and belief—qualities that could once again define CSK’s IPL 2026 campaign.
